Our Work to Expand Services for Kids with Development Disorders
Jackson County Stand for Children members advocated this session for expanded intervention and services for kids with development disorders like autism. Though legislation did not pass this session, advocates were successful in securing a Governor’s Commission on autism. A Commission subcommittee will focus their energy on preparing viable legislation for the 2011 session, allowing advocates and legislators time to resolve questions about who can bill for autism treatment and which services will be covered.
Already in the past four years, the legislature has passed two critical pieces of legislation benefiting kids with developmental disorders like autism. SB1, Mental Health Parity, and HB2918, Parity for Pervasive Developmental Disorders, require insurance carriers to cover intervention services. If you know a child with autism, tell their parents about these resources! If you or someone you know has been denied coverage, file a complaint with the Oregon Insurance Division. For more information on your rights under these state mandates, contact Oregon Insurance Division's Consumer Advocacy Hotline at 1-888-877-4894.
