Next Steps from the Forum - Join our Statewide Campaign!
At our recent forum (details below!) we kicked off our work on this spring’s statewide campaign. Here are two next steps you can take now:
- "Get on the bus" to the State House with Winchester’s Chapter on March 24! Bring a friend and join with other citizens from school districts around the state as a united voice for children on Beacon Hill. The bus for the indoor rally will leave Winchester at 9 a.m. and return by noon. RSVP required - register at www.stand.org/ma/rally.
- Whether you can make the rally or not, send along a postcard driving our message home. This year, our goal is to collect 1,000 postcards with personal statements about how tight times are affecting Winchester schools. These cards will be added to thousands from around the state and delivered to legislators in a united show of concern for Massachusetts public education. The more we send, the louder our voice. Look for postcard collection boxes inside every school, or fill out your postcard online: www.stand.org/postcard.
Can you help us collect postcards at a meeting or from your neighbors? Email Heidi Dileo at hdileo@stand.org for information on how you can take part!
Education Funding Forum Draws Crowd of 140
Close to 140 people gathered at Lincoln Auditorium on Monday, February 9th for our annual Education Funding Forum, "Keeping Schools Strong in Challenging Times."
Superintendent Bill McAlduff, Selectman Roger Berman, School Committee Member Sarah Girotti, Michele Norman of the Governor’s office, and Representative Jason Lewis bridged local concerns to state policies. The program began with a description of a vision for quality 21st century education, included a presentation of Winchester’s school budget request and school building plans in the context of projected fiscal deficits facing our town and state. Each speaker issued a call to action to join Stand for Children’s Rally on March 24th at the State House. Check out the slides from our presentation here.
Read the Winchester Star article, "Education forum focuses on funding." In the article, Sen. Pat Jehlen is quoted as saying, "Just about the only thing that gives me hope right now is Stand for Children.".
