Education = Top PriorityStand for Children is a citizen voice for children. Our mission is to teach everyday people how to join together in an effective grassroots voice in order to win concrete, long-lasting improvements for children, at both state and local levels.

Working with the Excellent Schools Now Coalition

Learn more about how education activists across Washington are working together during the 2010 legislative session to achieve meaningful education reform that increases student achievement, closes the achievement gap, and prepares students to be college- and career-ready. We joined the Excellent Schools Now Coalition to host a legislative luncheon January 14 where the governor's K-12 education policy adviser, Judy Hartmann, presented her reform plan to a group of lawmakers and community leaders. The group gathered in Olympia to talk about the Race to the Top federal reform initiative that promises to distribute $4.3 billion to states that embrace school reform. Read more at:

Quality Education Council

The Quality Education Council – the group tasked with proposing an implementation plan for our improved program of basic education resulting from ESHB 2261 – has recently released their initial report to the legislature. Check it out.

• 62% of all students in Washington graduate from high school with a regular diploma in four years. Fewer than half of African American and Hispanic students graduate in four years.

• Only 30% of 9th graders in Washington who complete high school go on to college.

• Dropouts from the class of 2008 will cost Washington almost $7.3 billion in lost wages over their lifetimes.
